Maureen Hamm Member Posts: 4 | It's not bad enough that those of us who support equal marriage rights for same gender couples have to put up with the crazy quilt nature of the laws (legal in one state, illegal in another.) Now a Louisiana Justice of the Peace Kevin Bardwell has refused to issue a marriage license to an interracial straight couple because " I don't believe in mixing the races that way." Hard to believe, but I read it in the Valley Times, (10/16/2009, p. AA7.) He denies he is racist and goes on to say "I have piles and piles of black friends. they come to my home, I marry them, they use my bathroom..." For a consciousness-raising experience, you can read "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett, a novel set in in 1962, about black maids in a small Mississippi town and the women they work for. Check your local library or support your local independent book store!

Use the same bathroom...How democratic! I wonder if he'd allow GLBTQ folks to use it? The book "The Help" is excellent; it felt very authentic from my childhood memories.
